Control rooms fail on details that an ordinary office forgives: a video wall operators have to crane their necks to read, a console too shallow for three monitors, an air-conditioner that cycles off at night, a ceiling that bounces every conversation across the room. Scoping starts with the operators and the work they do, and the interior is designed around that — which is the approach of ISO 11064, the international standard for the ergonomic design of control centres.
Command-centre work is growing in India: every one of the 100 Smart Cities now runs an integrated command and control centre, and Bengaluru’s Safe City project under the Nirbhaya Fund added a command centre and thousands of cameras. Enterprises are building NOCs and SOCs for the same reason — operations that must be watched around the clock.

Common questions
What standard applies to control room design?
ISO 11064, Ergonomic design of control centres. Its parts cover the overall design process, the arrangement of the control suite and room, workstation layout, displays and controls, the environment (lighting, acoustics, temperature) and evaluation.
What does a control room console cost?
Furniture-only consoles range from about ₹30,000–45,000 per position for basic units to ₹1–3 lakh for multi-bay control-room grade consoles, before monitors and PCs. Specification, bay count and cable management drive the price.
Can the room stay operational while it is upgraded?
Usually, by phasing the work and setting up a temporary operations area. The phasing plan is part of the scope and quotation.
